The Alma Mater Studiorum-University of Bologna is the oldest university in the Western world. Founded in 1088 AD by Irnerius legis doctor, for several centuries it was the most prestigious studium of Justinian’s Roman Law. Nowadays, the University of Bologna stands at the top positions of the Italian and European academic rankings, careful about preserving its glorious past but looking proactively towards the future.

The city of Bologna, which is the capital of the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, is one of the country’s most important cities, especially under a cultural, artistic (and culinary) point of view. The seventh most populous city in Italy, Bologna is commonly known as “la dotta, la grassa, la rossa” (“the learned, the fat, the red”).
